THE CLOSING NOTE
INFORMED BY LEARNING SCIENCE
Give a good idea another encounter. Attempt a problem, check your reasoning, and return to the concepts you’re learning. Opening Bell gives that practice a place in your day.
Revisiting the same material across separate sessions can support longer-term recall. Bring yesterday’s tricky concept into today’s practice.
Spacing research · Cepeda et al. ↗Trying to recall what you’ve learned can strengthen later memory. Before opening a solution, explain the idea from memory and attempt the problem.
Retrieval research · Roediger & Karpicke ↗Corrective feedback can help prevent wrong answers from sticking. Compare your answer with the explanation, then note what you’ll try differently.
Feedback research · Butler & Roediger ↗The adult brain can change with experience, including changes in the connections between neurons. Researchers call this capacity neuroplasticity. Studies have also observed changes in gray and white matter during particular kinds of learning. Read the neuroscience review ↗
Those findings help explain why learning remains possible throughout adulthood. They don’t establish that this game changes brain matter, raises IQ or improves trading performance.
The research supports these learning principles. Opening Bell itself has not yet been tested in a learning-outcomes study. About 15 minutes is our practical session target; the right pace and review interval depend on you and the material.
The time split is a suggested pace. Finish sooner or stay longer. This free preview reuses a small reviewed exercise bank; a larger daily curriculum, cross-device progress and subscriptions are on the drawing board.

One move. No escape. Look for checks, captures and covered squares.
Eight short chess compositions, with every legal mate accepted.

Checkmate means the king is in check and has no legal response. Test captures, blocks and flight squares. These are original teaching compositions using familiar mating patterns, not rated puzzles or a measure of trading ability.

POKER GTO LAB / 05
A small game with an exact answer. Find an equilibrium mix,
then learn when a supplied range calls for an exploit.
FIND THE MIX
This is the equilibrium of a simplified one-street river game, not a full hold’em solver. There is one fixed bet, followed by call or fold: no raises, future cards, ties, rake, or side pots. All value hands bet and beat this bluff-catcher. Air loses if it checks. The displayed combinations are conditional on the known cards and are equally weighted; all are interchangeable within their payoff class.
With pot P before the bet and bet B, a caller needs win probability B / (P + 2B). An indifferent air hand faces call frequency P / (P + B). If the starting range contains V value and A air combinations, the air range bets with aggregate frequency (V / A) × B / (P + B). The equilibrium drills use strictly interior cases, where that frequency lies between zero and one.
These frequencies describe a repeated randomized strategy, not a required action on a single deal. “Range EV” instead treats the displayed betting range as known and chooses the action with higher expected chips. Do not automatically defend at the equilibrium frequency against every opponent.
The formulas are derived from the payoffs of the basic endgame in Chris and Tom Ferguson’s The Endgame in Poker, section 1. Problems, explanations, and card graphics here are original. Scores reflect first submitted answers; revealing a solution earns no answer credit. No money is wagered.

Your spread is an invitation. Some guests know more than you.
Quote a fictional asset for 12 rounds. Every fill changes your inventory.
One unit per fill · 0.05 fee · inventory limit ±5
The reference moves after you quote, by a discrete shock between −4 and +4 points. Then one simulated trader arrives. On 35% of rounds, the trader sees the new reference and trades only when your quote is favorable to them. Other rounds have random buy, sell or no-trade intent. Those uninformed customers accept prices up to a random 1–5 points above the old reference when buying, or below it when selling. Wider quotes therefore miss more trades. The new reference is revealed after the round.
Buying increases your inventory and reduces cash; selling does the reverse. Marked P&L is cash + inventory × reference. Each fill costs 0.05 points. Trades that breach ±5 inventory are blocked. Quotes must be within 15 points of the current reference. At round 12, remaining inventory settles at the final reference without another fee.
“Lean with inventory” shifts your quote down when long and up when short. Reusing the same scenario reproduces the underlying shocks and flow, making it possible to compare policies. This is a teaching model, not a simulation calibrated to real execution or a prediction of trading returns.
